It’s September and Mountain Bike Bridges Are Flying!
We pre-fabed 6 bridges this summer, the majority for the new Cedar Valley connector trail. Last Sunday we loaded and trucked these bridges up to the Island Lake lower parking lot.
The trucking was done for us by TER Contracting at no charge to the FTA. A big thanks to Terry Polacik for his low bed and his time. Also a big thanks is owed to Peter Then for bringing his back-hoe up and unloading the bridges for us. If you see either of these gentlemen in the pub, buy them a beer for their volunteer contributions to our ever improving Fernie trail system.
Yours truly on the bobcat loading the bridges onto Terry’s low bed.
Yesterday a group of us got together and placed the bridges. Here are a few pictures:Waiting for the Jet Ranger to come and get em!Here’s Greg from Accent Helicopters and his flying machine.First 20 foot bridge all rigged and ready to go.Houston we have lift off!…and now some bridge decking!
….and now the first of the 40 foot spans.
Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club and the Fernie Trails Alliance would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out with this project both in manufacturing these bridges and installing them. Thanks to Terry Polacik (TER Contracting)and Peter Then for transporting and unloading. Greg Goodison and Dave Hawrys from Accent Helicopters….thanks for your fine aerial skills and getting all bridges in place safely. Thanks to Nick Morris for cutting the cedar decking. Thanks to Luke and Henry (Back Country Trail Experts) for the initial work on the trail. Thanks to Johnny Shaw and Mitch and their Wednesday night volunteer group for their ongoing efforts.
There is still much work to be done on this first phase of this connector, but it should be completed in the next couple weeks.
Some final touches being made on the approach of one of the 20 foot spans.
