Racehorse Pass Trail to Remain Open
Following the stakeholder consultation process, it looks like the Racehorse Pass trail has been removed from the government’s list of candidate roads to be decommissioned under the Cumulative Effects Management Framework project this summer.
The Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club participated in the process by asking that Racehorse Pass remain open for recreational use based on its historical use for bike packing and international bike races. The pass connects Alberta and BC south of Elkford and is highly recommended as an adventure ride.
Our club continues to support trail initiatives outside the Fernie Trails Alliance network and support the TransRockies Inc. with their events in this region.
Racehorse Pass remaining open is a win for other recreation groups in the Elk Valley and a great example of how we can work together for common values.
The Elk Valley Cumulative Effects Management Framework Project aims to reduce habitat fragmentation by decommissioning several km of roads and trails each summer. Roads that ‘pass’ consultation phases are fully recontoured by heavy machinery, culverts pulled, access ditched/signed, and the area reforested.
