We are looking for volunteers to help complete the Harvey Pass warming hut for the coming snow season! Harvey Pass has lost three previous cabins to fire, the last cabin burnt prior to being completed. This build is using a sea can to ensure its survival!

The Harvey Hut is an official BC Recreation site, see more here. The hut will be a warming hut only for day use, there will be no nightly rentals.

The location is a popular for touring and snowmobiling and there are several trappers in the area. It also is an active logging region so using a radio and calling in your km location is mandatory. Logging trucks are extremely dangerous, please respect the requirement.

Who and when:

We’re looking for carpenters, labourers, brush cutters, firewood cutters, and community minded people.

The plan is to work on Friday August 27, Saturday 28 and Sunday 29.

On Friday we’ll focus on brush clearing the road and cleaning up on the previous cabin site, deck building on Saturday, and getting the sea can in place and installing the roof on Sunday.

The tasks include:

– brushing a short section of road for truck access to the site

– cleaning up the previous cabin burn site

– building a platform for the sea can

– pull the sea san onto the deck with an excavator

– build a partial roof over the entrance and deck

– set up the pit-toilet

– stock firewood for coming season

– stove, furniture and electrical install

– BC Rec Site kiosk install

What to bring:

The days will be long and we ask everyone to bring lots of food and water.

We do need tools including brush saws, chain saws, shovels, carpenter tools, generators, etc. Please advise on the tools you can bring.

How to get there:

It’s 45 minute drive to Harvey Pass and most people will be driving daily. Some people might be camping. If you need a drive let us know, we’ll be vehicle pooling. If you don’t have a radio, please follow a vehicle who has.

The warming hut will be a public facility for all users and we welcome everyone to join us to complete this facility.
