Three Sisters – Fairy Creek Meadows
Ten of us took a Helicopter ride into the Three Sisters for a day of ski touring. Landed at 2208 meters in Fairy Creek Meadows and did our snow evaluations before our first descent. Snowpack is 3.0 meters at 2200 meters elevation and has two surface hoar layers in the top 30 cm. We immediately realized we had a surface hoar problem with the 15cm to 30cm new snow on top. Throughout the day we released a dozen slides between class 1 and 2 and we had to be very careful and choose our terrain well. Unfortunately Fairy Creek Meadows is big mountain terrain and a difficult place to retreat from. All worked out well in the end and had very nice pow skiing on the shallower slopes on the way out. The steep alpine slopes are certainly a no go zone in the near future.
