Thunder Meadows Summer 2025 Upgrade

The Thunder Meadows backcountry cabin received its yearly update this July, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club volunteers. The beloved hut, a cornerstone of the local backcountry experience, now offers improved safety, comfort, and long-term sustainability for the upcoming winter season.

Key Improvements
This summer’s work focused on both critical repairs and quality-of-life upgrades:
• Lighting Repairs & Improvements: The cabin’s lighting system was repaired and improved for safer, more reliable illumination on long winter nights.
• New Chimney & Wood Stove Surround: A full chimney replacement and the installation of a protective stove surround ensure safer and more efficient heating.
• Roof Repairs: Volunteers addressed roof wear and tear to protect the cabin from the heavy snow loads that define Fernie winters.
• Loft Trim & Paint: The sleeping loft was trimmed and freshly painted, brightening the interior and adding durability.
• New Camp Chairs: A welcome comfort upgrade for tired skiers and hikers.
• Woodshed Completion: Construction of a new woodshed—including roofing, trim, and soffit—was finalized to keep firewood dry and accessible.
• Firewood Delivery: Four cords of split firewood were flown in to keep visitors warm throughout the season.
• Site Cleanup: Crews removed construction debris and dismantled the old toilet waste system, leaving the surrounding area cleaner and more environmentally secure.

A Volunteer-Driven Effort
All of these improvements were made possible by the club’s tireless volunteers and the support of members whose contributions fund ongoing maintenance. The work not only enhances user comfort but also safeguards the cabin’s long-term future as a key backcountry asset.

Ready for Winter
With the upgrades complete and four cords of wood in place, Thunder Meadows is ready to welcome winter visitors seeking adventure in the Lizard Range. The improvements reflect the club’s ongoing commitment to safety, stewardship, and providing a high-quality hut experience for both members and non-members alike.
