Today we triggered an 85 cm slab on a N aspect W of the saddle (skiers left) at Harvey - walking to a large tree on the flat ridgetop the slab propagated from shallow snow in the tree well out into the top of the slope (40 deg ) and then 60m wide and 200m long - a serious sz 2. This location is only a few hundred metres from a slope below the cliffs to the E where a sledder was buried with only his head and one hand exposed one week ago. The buried SH is touchy if you hit the wrong spot - we need to give slopes greater than 30 degrees a wide berth.

Hi everyone –

Great email Gord. I’m not entirely sure who all I’m writing or what the background is, but allow me to add a quick high-level summary about SPAWs in general:

1. We try to prevent the next accident. Most accidents are human-triggered. People are not suicidal and use avalanches like the Golden Gate Bridge. That suggests a gap between perceived conditions and reality. SPAWs are often issued at times when we think that gap is wide or widening.
2. Often it’s times when obvious clues aren’t that obvious. When you need to be a bit of a detective. Often decision making is easy when danger ratings are HIGH. The mountains are rumbling and you don’t need much training to see the hazard. Decision making is often trickier going into and coming out of a Natural cycle. See the attached graph about decision confidence.
3. There have to be clear, concise, and effective suggestions for what people can do to better manage their risk. We need to be able to help, and the media is a very blunt instrument – nuanced messaging is difficult.

Just got back from Tunnel Creek cabin. Took Julien and I, 2.5 hrs to get up to cabin. Last part still very steep and not enough snowpack to make switchbacks. Make sure your skins are in good shape if you plan on going there in the near future. Great place for a shelter. Looking forward to going again and touring around. Cheers to all who made this possible. Gio Jan. 11th 2011.
